German-French hybrid format: PDF with embedded XML.
A ZUGFeRD document is a normal PDF file with a CII invoice embedded as an attachment. People read the PDF, machines read the XML.
The profiles range from Minimum to Basic, EN 16931 (Comfort) to Extended. Only the profiles from EN 16931 onwards are fully compliant with the European standard.
Factur-X is technically the same format; the name comes from France. Attachment file name: factur-x.xml or zugferd-invoice.xml.
